Dinesh Karthik Explains Why Andy Flower May Not Become England’s Next Test Coach
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik believes Andy Flower has all the qualities needed to become England’s next Test head coach. However, he feels the Zimbabwean coach’s existing commitments with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) could make the appointment difficult.
Flower has emerged as one of the leading names after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) ended Brendon McCullum’s tenure as Test coach and began searching for a replacement.
Karthik Backs Flower for England Role
Speaking about the possibility, Karthik said Flower would be one of the strongest candidates for the position because of his vast coaching experience and success at both international and franchise level.
Having worked closely with Flower during RCB’s IPL 2026 title-winning campaign, Karthik praised his tactical understanding and described him as one of the best coaches in world cricket.
RCB Contract Could Be the Biggest Challenge
Despite supporting Flower’s credentials, Karthik believes his current contract with Royal Challengers Bengaluru could become a major obstacle.
He pointed out that England’s international schedule often overlaps with the Indian Premier League, raising questions over whether the ECB would be comfortable allowing its Test coach to miss preparation camps or even parts of a Test series because of IPL commitments.
According to Karthik, balancing both responsibilities over a long period would be extremely challenging.
England Open to Flexible Coaching Arrangements
Reports suggest the ECB is willing to consider candidates who continue coaching in franchise cricket if it helps secure the best person for the role.
However, Karthik feels managing both an IPL franchise and England’s Test team would be difficult, particularly in an Ashes year when preparation becomes even more important.
Flower’s Coaching Record Speaks for Itself
Andy Flower is widely regarded as one of the most successful coaches in modern cricket.
During his previous stint with England, he guided the team to multiple Ashes victories and helped them reach the No.1 position in the ICC Test rankings. More recently, he has enjoyed success in franchise cricket, including leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru to the IPL 2026 title.
His experience has made him one of the strongest contenders to replace McCullum.
ECB Yet to Begin Formal Recruitment
The ECB has confirmed that no official approach has been made to any candidate so far. The recruitment process is expected to begin in the coming weeks as England look to appoint a new Test coach before preparations for the next Ashes series gather pace.
While Flower remains among the favourites, his future may ultimately depend on whether his franchise commitments can be balanced with the demands of international cricket.
