The countdown to the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 officially began as the tournament venues were unveiled during a grand launch event in Johannesburg. Cricket’s biggest 50-over tournament will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia from October 4 to November 11, 2027.

Fourteen teams will compete for the prestigious trophy across 12 venues, with matches spread across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

South Africa will stage the bulk of the tournament, with matches scheduled at eight venues across the country. Zimbabwe will host games in Harare, Bulawayo, and the under-construction Victoria Falls Stadium, while Namibia’s newly built Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek will also feature as a World Cup venue.

The official launch was held at Johannesburg’s Inanda Club and attended by several former and current South African stars, including Makhaya Ntini, Hashim Amla, Temba Bavuma, and Kagiso Rabada, alongside officials from the three host nations.

Memories of the 2003 World Cup Still Fresh

The announcement inevitably brought back memories of the 2003 ODI World Cup, the last time South Africa hosted the tournament.

That edition remains one of the most unforgettable in cricket history for South African fans. The hosts began their campaign with a heartbreaking three-run defeat against the West Indies before suffering the infamous Duckworth-Lewis tie against Sri Lanka in Durban, which resulted in their shocking first-round elimination.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have retained their position as the most valuable franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL), becoming the first cricket team to cross the $300 million brand value milestone.

According to the latest report by global investment bank Houlihan Lokey, RCB’s brand value has reached $312 million, while the IPL’s overall business value has grown to $20.6 billion, reflecting another year of strong commercial growth.

RCB Cross Historic $300 Million Mark

RCB recorded a 16% increase in brand value over the past year, rising from $269 million in 2025 to $312 million in 2026.

The Bengaluru-based franchise also created history by becoming the first cricket team to surpass the $300 million brand value mark.

Earlier this year, RCB also witnessed a change in ownership after a consortium comprising Blackstone, Bolt Ventures, the Aditya Birla Group and the Times of India Group acquired the franchise at a valuation of $1.78 billion.

IPL Business Value Crosses $20 Billion

The Houlihan Lokey report estimates that the IPL’s overall business value has increased from $18.5 billion to $20.6 billion over the past 12 months.

The 11.4% growth marks the league’s second consecutive year of double-digit growth, highlighting the IPL’s continued expansion as one of the world’s biggest sporting properties.

According to Harsh Talikoti, Director at Houlihan Lokey’s Financial and Valuation Advisory business, institutional investment and global ownership continue to accelerate cricket’s growth.

While RCB lead the rankings, Mumbai Indians remain second with a brand value of $264 million, reflecting a 9.1% increase from last year.

Kolkata Knight Riders occupy third position with a brand value of $245 million, followed closely by Chennai Super Kings at $244 million.

CSK’s valuation grew by 3.8% over the previous year.

RCB Owners Highlight Fan Base Strength

RCB chairman and Times Internet chairman Satyan Gajwani credited the franchise’s passionate supporters for its continued commercial success.

According to him, RCB’s fan engagement and emotional connection with supporters make the franchise unique within the IPL ecosystem.

Punjab Kings co-owner Ness Wadia believes IPL franchises are no longer viewed simply as cricket teams.

Instead, he said they are increasingly being recognised as long-term sports and entertainment businesses capable of generating enormous audiences, sponsorship revenue and fan engagement.

Wadia also pointed out that, on a per-match basis, IPL media rights now compare favourably with some of the biggest sporting leagues in the world despite the tournament being only 18 years old.

Punjab Kings followed closely at $158 million, ahead of Gujarat Titans ($157 million) and Delhi Capitals ($156 million).

Lucknow Super Giants completed the rankings in tenth place with a brand value of $122 million, unchanged from last year.

The latest report underlines the IPL’s growing commercial strength, with franchise values and league revenues continuing to rise year after year.

India vice-captain Tilak Varma admitted that the T20I series victory over Zimbabwe has come as a welcome relief following disappointing results against Ireland and England.

India secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series after registering a dominant 90-run victory over Zimbabwe in the second T20I at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday.

Tilak played a major role in the victory, smashing an unbeaten 60 off just 29 deliveries before contributing with the ball with figures of 1 for 9 from two overs.

Tilak Varma Relieved After Back-to-Back Series Defeats

India entered the Zimbabwe tour under pressure after losing their previous two T20I series.

They suffered a 2-0 defeat against Ireland before being comprehensively beaten by England. According to Tilak, India’s performances in the opening two matches against Zimbabwe showed the team’s determination to respond strongly.

“It’s quite a bit of a relief for us. If you see, the last two series didn’t go our way. But especially the way we have played the last two games was really good,” Tilak said in a BCCI video.

Tilak and Ishan Kishan Turn Up the Heat

Tilak walked out to bat following captain Shreyas Iyer’s dismissal and joined an in-form Ishan Kishan in the middle.

The pair added a crucial 94 runs, putting India firmly in control.

Kishan was the leading scorer with a blistering 81 off 44 balls, while Tilak provided the acceleration with his unbeaten 60.

Tilak credited Kishan’s aggressive approach for helping him settle into his innings.

“I just held my shape, and I was backing myself. I got those few good boundaries, and from there I just kept going,” Tilak said.

He also praised Kishan’s intent from the beginning, saying the left-hander’s attacking batting was “tremendous to watch.”

Tilak also highlighted the importance of Shreyas Iyer’s 25-run contribution.

Although the Indian captain couldn’t convert his start into a bigger innings, Tilak believes his cameo helped maintain the momentum before Kishan and Tilak launched their assault.

“Small cameo from Iyer was also important for the team. From there, I just wanted to maintain that momentum throughout the overs,” Tilak explained.

India eventually posted a massive total before their bowlers completely overwhelmed the Zimbabwe batting line-up.

Tilak Varma Working Hard on His Bowling

Tilak’s contribution wasn’t restricted to batting.

The 23-year-old dismissed Ryan Burl and conceded only nine runs from his two overs.

More importantly, Tilak revealed that he is putting significant effort into developing his bowling and wants to regularly contribute two or three overs for India.

“I’m working really hard on my bowling. If you give two overs or three overs for the team, it really helps,” he said.

Tilak believes becoming a reliable bowling option could provide India with greater flexibility in their team combination.

“Going forward, my aim is to give the team at least two or three overs because it really helps the combination,” he added.

India completed an emphatic victory by bowling Zimbabwe out for 129, sealing the match by 90 runs.

Abhishek Sharma starred with the ball, returning impressive figures of 3 for 17 as Zimbabwe’s chase collapsed.

Former India batter and selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth has raised concerns over India’s lack of genuine pace-bowling all-rounders as the team builds towards the 2027 ODI World Cup.

With Hardik Pandya currently working towards regaining peak fitness, India have experimented with several alternatives, including Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy and even fast bowler Harshit Rana.

However, Srikkanth believes none of those options can currently provide the balance Hardik brings to the Indian side.

Hardik is reportedly undergoing a “performance block” programme at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) as part of his preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

The BCCI is reportedly unwilling to rush the star all-rounder back into action and wants him fully fit for the marquee tournament.

Hardik’s ability to contribute as a middle-order batter while also providing crucial overs of pace makes him an important part of India’s ODI combination.

Srikkanth Questions India’s All-Round Options

In Hardik’s absence, India have experimented with Shivam Dube and Nitish Kumar Reddy, while Harshit Rana has also been considered for a similar role because of his batting potential.

Srikkanth, however, believes India currently have only one genuine pace-bowling all-rounder.

Speaking on Star Sports, the former India selector said Hardik remains the team’s only complete all-round option. He described Nitish as the next-best alternative who could bat at No. 7 and contribute a few overs.

He was far less convinced about Dube and Harshit being considered genuine all-rounders.

Nitish Kumar Reddy Could Be Hardik’s Back-Up

Srikkanth’s assessment puts Nitish Kumar Reddy ahead of India’s other potential alternatives.

Reddy’s ability to bat in the lower-middle order and contribute with the ball gives India flexibility, although Srikkanth believes he is still some distance away from offering the complete package Hardik provides.

Finding a reliable back-up could become increasingly important as India plan their squad for the 2027 World Cup.

Srikkanth Questions Ravindra Jadeja’s Exclusion

Srikkanth also questioned why veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja appears to have fallen out of India’s ODI plans.

He described Jadeja as a “silent killer” and argued that his performances warrant continued consideration.

Jadeja has not announced his retirement from ODI cricket, and Srikkanth believes he should remain in the selectors’ plans if his performances justify selection.

He also highlighted Jadeja’s contribution during India’s 2023 ODI World Cup campaign and his ability to produce match-winning performances.

The situation leaves India with an important selection question ahead of the World Cup.

Pakistan have suffered a significant injury setback with young opener Abdullah Fazal ruled out of the upcoming Test series against West Indies and England due to a lower back injury.

The 23-year-old sustained the injury during a training session at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, where Pakistan are preparing for their opening Test against West Indies.

Medical examinations have confirmed that Fazal will require rehabilitation before returning to competitive cricket.

Abdullah Fazal Suffers Back Injury in Training

Fazal picked up the injury while training with the Pakistan squad in Tarouba.

Following the setback, the opener underwent an MRI scan and further medical assessment, which confirmed the extent of the lower back problem.

He has subsequently been ruled out of Pakistan’s upcoming ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 assignments against West Indies and England.

Pakistan have not yet announced a replacement.

Major Setback After Impressive Test Debut

The timing of the injury is particularly disappointing for Fazal after an encouraging beginning to his international career.

The young batter made his Test debut against Bangladesh in May and immediately made an impression.

He registered half-centuries in both innings and finished as Pakistan’s leading run-scorer in the match.

Those performances had strengthened his claim for an extended opportunity at the top of Pakistan’s Test batting order.

His injury now forces the team management to reconsider its batting combination.

Awais Zafar Could Make Test Debut

Fazal’s absence could create an opportunity for Awais Zafar to make his Test debut.

The middle-order batter was initially added to Pakistan’s squad as cover for the injured Saud Shakeel.

The final T20I between India and Zimbabwe will be played in Harare on July 26.

India could also use the dead rubber to test their bench strength, particularly with captain Shreyas Iyer indicating that changes could be considered for the final match.

Sri Lanka Women produced a superb batting display to chase down 274 against Pakistan, with centuries from Vishmi Gunaratne and Harshitha Samarawickrama powering the hosts to victory and levelling the three-match ODI series at 1-1.

The pair put together a record-breaking 205-run partnership for the second wicket, helping Sri Lanka complete their third-highest successful chase in women’s ODI cricket with 19 balls remaining.

For Pakistan, Sidra Amin’s unbeaten century went in vain as their bowlers managed only two wickets while defending 273.

Chamari Athapaththu Falls Early

Sri Lanka’s chase suffered an early setback when captain Chamari Athapaththu was dismissed for just 1.

Pakistan skipper Fatima Sana provided the breakthrough at the start of the fifth over, inducing an outside edge that was taken behind the stumps.

At that stage, Pakistan had an opportunity to put Sri Lanka under pressure.

Instead, Gunaratne and Samarawickrama took complete control.

Gunaratne and Samarawickrama Add Record 205 Runs

The two batters initially focused on keeping the scoreboard moving without taking unnecessary risks.

Gunaratne was the more aggressive of the pair, reaching her half-century from 55 deliveries, while Samarawickrama needed 74 balls for her fifty.

As the required rate climbed beyond six runs per over after the halfway stage, both batters began finding the boundary more regularly.

Their acceleration quickly brought the asking rate back under control.

The partnership eventually reached 205 runs, making it Sri Lanka Women’s first 200-plus partnership for any wicket in ODI cricket.

Vishmi Gunaratne Smashes 123

Gunaratne converted her strong start into a memorable century, reaching three figures from 107 balls.

She eventually departed for 123, stumped with Sri Lanka still requiring another 52 runs from 64 deliveries.

It was Gunaratne’s second ODI century.

Her dismissal gave Pakistan a small opening, but the required rate was already manageable.

Harshitha Samarawickrama Completes Century

Kavisha Dilhari joined Samarawickrama and immediately kept the chase moving by scoring at better than a run a ball.

With only eight runs required for victory, Samarawickrama struck a boundary to complete her century from 119 deliveries.

Dilhari then struck the winning boundary as Sri Lanka completed the chase with 19 balls to spare.

Gunaratne and Samarawickrama now have two ODI hundreds each and are the only Sri Lankan women apart from Athapaththu to have scored multiple centuries in the format.

Sidra Amin’s Unbeaten Century Goes in Vain

Earlier, Sri Lanka asked Pakistan to bat first.

Pakistan’s openers managed starts but couldn’t convert them into substantial scores before Sidra Amin took responsibility for anchoring the innings.

Ayesha Zafar provided valuable acceleration, scoring 49 from just 45 deliveries before Dilhari bowled her in the 27th over.

Amin then combined with Muneeba Ali in an 88-run partnership from 105 deliveries, taking Pakistan beyond 220.

Pakistan Reach 273 Despite Late Acceleration

Fatima Sana provided some much-needed late impetus with 25 from 18 balls.

Amin remained unbeaten and completed her seventh ODI century in the final over, helping Pakistan finish with a competitive 273.

On another day, that total may have been enough.

Sri Lanka’s top order, however, produced one of its finest ODI chases.

Sri Lanka Level Series 1-1

The victory was particularly significant because Sri Lanka recovered from the early dismissal of Athapaththu without allowing the chase to lose momentum.

Gunaratne and Samarawickrama’s record partnership demonstrated the increasing depth in Sri Lanka’s batting order, while Dilhari calmly completed the job.

With the series now level at 1-1, the third and final ODI will decide the winner.

Trinbago Knight Riders have retained the services of Usman Tariq following his impressive contribution to their title-winning campaign last season.

Tariq is currently playing for Birmingham Phoenix, and with the CPL overlapping with The Hundred, his availability throughout the tournament could depend on his commitments in England.

TKR have also strengthened their squad with Matthew Breetzke and USA bowling allrounder Amshi de Silva.

De Silva attracted attention during MLC 2026 with his unusual slingy action, pace and ability to execute yorkers.

The newcomers join a powerful TKR core featuring Sunil Narine, Nicholas Pooran, Kieron Pollard and Akeal Hosein.

Glenn Phillips Joins Guyana Amazon Warriors

Last season’s runners-up Guyana Amazon Warriors have brought back veteran South African spinner Imran Tahir while adding Glenn Phillips to their overseas group.

Phillips has been recovering from a side injury but is expected to return to competitive action during the CPL.

The New Zealand allrounder could prove particularly useful in Guyana, where slower surfaces often provide assistance to spin bowling.

Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi has also joined the Warriors, giving them another experienced spin-bowling option.

Their overseas contingent also includes Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Dwaine Pretorius.

Naseem Shah Joins St Kitts & Nevis Patriots

Pakistan fast bowler Naseem Shah has been picked by St Kitts & Nevis Patriots.

An interesting storyline could see Naseem face his brother Hunain Shah, who will represent Jamaica Kingsmen.

The Patriots have assembled a strong overseas bowling group featuring Wanindu Hasaranga and Waqar Salamkheil, while Australian allrounder Nikhil Chaudhary is another addition.

Noor Ahmad and Tim Seifert Return to St Lucia Kings

St Lucia Kings have brought back Tim Seifert and Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmad.

Noor will combine with Sri Lanka’s Maheesh Theekshana, potentially giving the Kings one of the competition’s strongest overseas spin attacks.

Sri Lanka batter Charith Asalanka is also part of their squad, while USA seamer Shadley van Schalkwyk is set for his first CPL campaign.

Barbados Tridents have secured the return of South African wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock.

Shadab Khan Signs With Antigua & Barbuda Falcons

Antigua & Barbuda Falcons have strengthened their spin department by signing Pakistan duo Shadab Khan and Sufyan Moqim.

Shadab already has CPL experience, while Moqim will get an opportunity to test his left-arm wristspin in Caribbean conditions.

However, both are expected to be available for only seven CPL matches because of other commitments.

Moeen Ali and Kusal Perera are expected to be available for the entire tournament.

Veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has been left out of Afghanistan’s 15-member squad for the upcoming five-match ODI series against Ireland, beginning on August 5.

The series will also mark the beginning of a new leadership chapter for Afghanistan, with Rahmat Shah set to captain the national side for the first time. Wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been appointed his deputy.

Fazalhaq Farooqi Returns to ODI Squad

Afghanistan have strengthened their pace department by recalling left-arm fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi.

Yamin Ahmadzai and Saleem Safi have also been included for the Ireland tour as Afghanistan make several changes from the squad that travelled to India last month.

Along with Nabi, Fareed Malik and Bilal Sami are the other players who have missed out.

Rahmat Shah Begins New Era as Captain

The Ireland series will be Afghanistan’s first ODI assignment since Rahmat Shah replaced Hashmatullah Shahidi as captain.

Rahmat has been one of Afghanistan’s most dependable batters and brings considerable international experience into his new leadership role.

Former captain Hashmatullah Shahidi remains part of the squad and could continue to play an important role in the middle order.

Rashid Khan Headlines Spin Attack

Afghanistan will once again have Rashid Khan leading their spin department.

He will be joined by AM Ghazanfar, Nangyal Kharotai and Zia ur Rahman Sharifi, giving the visitors several spin options for the five-match series.
