Shimron Hetmyer Recalled as West Indies Replace Injured Justin Greaves for New Zealand ODIs
West Indies have made a change to their squad for the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand, with Shimron Hetmyer replacing the injured Justin Greaves for the second and third matches.
Greaves suffered a back injury before the opening ODI in Providence and has returned to Barbados to continue his rehabilitation under the supervision of Cricket West Indies (CWI).
Justin Greaves Ruled Out with Back Injury
Cricket West Indies confirmed that Greaves will miss the remaining matches of the initial ODI leg after sustaining a back injury.
The all-rounder did not feature in the first ODI and will now undergo further rehabilitation before being reassessed ahead of the final two ODIs against New Zealand and the upcoming two-match Test series against Pakistan.
Hetmyer Returns to the ODI Squad
Shimron Hetmyer returns to the West Indies ODI setup after missing the first part of the series.
The left-handed batter was initially unavailable because he was representing the Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket (MLC). However, after the Orcas failed to qualify for the knockout stage, Hetmyer became available for national selection.
His return gives West Indies additional experience and firepower in the middle order.
MLC Campaign Ends Early
Hetmyer featured in 10 matches during the 2026 Major League Cricket season, scoring 164 runs with an impressive strike rate of 136.66.
Although his franchise could not progress beyond the league stage, the early exit has allowed him to rejoin the national team for the remainder of the New Zealand series.
Greaves Hoping for Timely Return
Despite missing the current ODIs, Greaves remains in contention for the upcoming matches later in the series if he recovers in time.
The all-rounder heads into rehabilitation after an impressive run in Test cricket, where he played a key role in West Indies’ recent series success against Sri Lanka and was named Player of the Series.
West Indies Looking to Extend Their Lead
West Indies made an excellent start to the ODI series with a seven-wicket victory in the opening match against New Zealand.
With momentum on their side, the hosts will now look to strengthen their advantage in the remaining fixtures, while Hetmyer will be eager to make an immediate impact after returning to the squad.
